Kalloni Salt Pans Birdwatching (spring migration)

39° 12.3′ N · 26° 15.6′ E

Lesvos is one of Europe's top birding destinations, and the salt pans and marshes around the Gulf of Kalloni are its heart: flamingos, avocets, black-winged stilts, ruddy shelducks, black and white storks, plus spring migrants fresh from Africa.

Practical

Coordinate is the Kalloni salt pans (Alyki Kallonis) in OpenStreetMap; numbered bird hides line the pans (e.g. 39.21249, 26.24119 and 39.22461, 26.24213), and Visit Lesvos lists the Tsiknias, Lotzaria, Kampos and Ennia Kamares observatories around Kalloni. More than 300 species recorded (over 330 per Lesvos Birdwatching); best in spring and autumn, with mid-April the classic peak. Island specialities: Krüper's nuthatch and cinereous bunting. Local guide: Lesvos Birdwatching (tel +30 6972809610). Reach by dinghy to Skala Kallonis and a 2–3 km walk or taxi; bring binoculars and stay on tracks — the area is Natura 2000.
