Fourni Ancient Shipwrecks
37° 34.0′ N · 26° 30.0′ E
The densest known concentration of ancient wrecks in the Aegean: systematic surveys since 2014-15 have documented 58 to 62 shipwrecks from the 6th century BC to the 20th century, most carrying amphora cargoes from the Black Sea, Aegean, North Africa and Spain.
Practical
In March 2026 Greece's Ministry of Culture announced two Visitable Underwater Archaeological Sites: Akra Fygou (Aspros Kavos) on Fourni - seven wrecks on four planned dive routes, about 23-41 m (wrecks from 6 m to 49 m), including Wreck 15 with Black Sea amphorae - and Vathylakas Bay on Thymaina, with wreck 45 (4th century AD, 54-67 m, technical diving only) plus wrecks at 8-30 m. The plan includes 24 protected zones and 14 mooring buoys and light markers, with controlled access via licensed operators. Outside designated routes, diving on or disturbing antiquities is illegal in Greece - do not anchor on or touch wrecks. The research excavation itself is not open to visitors. Position is the archipelago reference point (Wikipedia); exact site coordinates are not published. Dive trips from Ikaria: Amaso Dive Center (Agios Kirykos).
