Castle of the Knights / Kastellorizo museum

36° 9.0′ N · 29° 35.7′ E

The red-stone ruins of the 14th-century Knights' castle ('Castello Rosso') on the harbour's east point, with the island's archaeological museum beside it and a Doric inscription carved in the rock below.

Practical

Wikipedia: a path above the east quay leads to the castle. A curtain wall, part of a square tower, two round towers and a large covered cistern survive. The Archaeological Museum of Kastellorizo is next to it (OSM 36.15162, 29.59369); check hours locally. Since 2020 the island also has an interactive Puzzle Museum. Ancient Palaiokastro, the island's acropolis, is inland west of town beyond Vigla (270 m). Noonsite: a 400-step path behind town climbs for breathtaking views to Turkey, with a centuries-old monastery further up.
