Polyaigos Sea Caves
36° 45.1′ N · 24° 38.2′ E · approximate
Polyaigos's coast is cut with sea caves where the Mediterranean monk seal still breeds. Snorkellers can enjoy the cliffs and arches from outside, but the caves themselves belong to the seals.
Practical
Wikipedia: sea-level caves shelter a dwindling monk seal population; el.wikipedia: monk seals give birth on the island. Cave positions are not published (they are pupping sites), so the pin is the island centre from Wikipedia (approx). MOm, the Greek monk seal society, asks swimmers never to enter a sea cave where a seal may be, but to back away slowly along the rocks so as not to block the entrance, since a mother and pup may be inside. Snorkel the reefs and arches at Mersini and the south coast instead.
Best for
Responsible snorkelling along the cliffs
