Megas Gialos (Syros)
37° 22.7′ N · 24° 54.7′ E
One of the largest sandy beaches on the island, at the south tip, with a small pier and some tourist facilities nearby. It is a lee from the meltemi and popular with day boats.
Practical
Grecosailor reviewers report a hard, varied bottom of sand, rock and seagrass, so dive on the anchor. They prefer the eastern side, which has fewer swimmers. The Port Fund lists a pier mooring, lighting, changing rooms and water for swimmers; it is about 12 km from Ermoupoli. Sailingissues gives a second spot in tiny Abela cove just west (see Abela Cove). George Yachts calls Vari/Megas Gialos a settled-weather option. Exposed to S.
