Mediterranean Monk Seals (Milos & Kimolos)

36° 46.5′ N · 24° 32.7′ E · approximate

Endangered Mediterranean monk seals breed in the Milos–Kimolos–Polyaigos 'triangle', resting in remote sea caves along the wild coasts; a sighting from the dinghy or while snorkelling is possible but rare.

Practical

Milos Diving Center: the seal 'chooses this triangle for its reproduction'. Sailing Issues: the sea caves of Polyaigos are a refuge for the dwindling population. MOm guidance: in the water stay calm, do not approach and never aim a speargun near it; never enter a sea cave where a seal may be (it may be a mother and pup), swim slowly away along the rocks without blocking the entrance; on land stay at least 30 m away, keep quiet, never touch or feed it, keep children and pets back. Report sightings, even dead seals, to MOm on +30 210 5222 888 or the 24-hour line +30 6942 494471, or to the Port Police. Pin is the strait between Pollonia and Kimolos (approx); see also Polyaigos Natura 2000 Area & Monk Seals.
