Livadi Beach (Iraklia)

36° 51.2′ N · 25° 28.5′ E

Iraklia's longest and most prominent sand beach, a short walk south of the port, below the ruins of an ancient hilltop castle.

Practical

The bight is too wide to shelter from the prevailing NE meltemi (sailingissues). Best in westerlies and south-westerlies: George Yachts gives sand in the south corner with good holding and excellent W-SW shelter. An underwater power cable crosses the rocky centre of the bay, so keep clear of it. Grecosailor reports Navionics cable positions are inaccurate, and the bottom is sand, rubble, small rocks and grass; one crew dived to check before setting. Very shallow near the shore. The castle ruins (Kastro Livadiou) stand on the hill at the south end; George Yachts dates them to the 4th century BC. The port's tavernas and shops are a short walk north.

Best for

Swim-and-sand stop in westerlies; castle-ruin walk

Season

Calm or W-SW winds; exposed to the NE meltemi
