Ano Syros Medieval Town
37° 27.0′ N · 24° 56.1′ E
The 13th-century Venetian Catholic hill town above Ermoupoli: a white maze of stepped lanes, arches and chapels, topped by the Catholic church of San Giorgio, with views over Tinos, Mykonos and Paros.
Practical
From the quay, walk up the steep stepped lanes, or take a taxi up and walk down. Sights: San Giorgio (first built 1208, rebuilt three times), the Capuchin monastery (1637), and the museum of rebetiko musician Markos Vamvakaris. Ano Syros is the seat of the Catholic diocese of Syros and Milos. Tavernas: see Apanochoritissa, Lilis and Hygge (Ano Syros). Go for sunset and carry water; there is little shade on the climb.
