Landmark· Anafi· Greece — Cyclades

Anafi Chora

36° 21.1′ N · 25° 46.1′ E

A whitewashed hill village about 200 m up behind the harbour, wrapped around a ruined Venetian kastro and topped by windmills. It feels like the Cyclades of forty years ago.

Practical

An asphalt road climbs from the port; Greeka says there are no vehicles for hire, so most people walk. The windmills stand on the ruins of an old Venetian palace (Greeka). The fortifications above the village are attributed to William Crispo in the 15th century (Wikipedia). Ashore: a supermarket and a mini market, Nikoli bakery, tavernas (Astrachan, To Steki, Armenaki, Liotrivi), cafés and a pub (OSM); a small archaeological collection; the medical unit; and a memorial to the island's use as a place of exile. Small and quiet: shop hours shrink outside July-August.

Best for

Evening walk and dinner up from the harbour
