Teahupo'o Wave & Village

17° 51.9′ S · 149° 15.4′ W

Tahiti's world-famous reef wave: big, consistent surf folding hollow over reef as little as 51 cm below the surface. It hosted the 2024 Olympic surfing competition, the venue farthest from Paris.

Practical

Coordinates are the wave (Tahiti Heritage); the village is at -17.8472, -149.2672 at the end of the single-lane south-west road (Wikipedia). The Billabong Pro has run here since 1999. Watch from a boat channel off the reef with a local operator, never from a yacht near the break. Day anchoring for boats of 10 m or less is allowed sunrise to sunset on the Ahuatoa sandbank inside the reef nearby (arrêté 41 CM 2024).
