La Source & Plateau aux Tortues (Pointe des Pêcheurs)

17° 38.0′ S · 149° 37.1′ W

Some call it the most beautiful dive on Tahiti's west coast: coral reef, turtles, chevron barracuda, eagle rays, whitetip sharks, Napoleon wrasse and an underwater freshwater spring.

Practical

Coordinates are Eleuthera's 'La Source'. Close by: 'Plateau aux Tortues' (-17.63131, -149.61834), a disc-shaped plateau with gorgonians and black coral on its steep edge, where dolphins are often heard; 'Trois Pitons' (-17.63176, -149.61886), three peaks topping out at about 6, 12 and 20 m; and the 'Dérive des Raies' (-17.63458, -149.61765), one of Tahiti's few drift dives, with schools of spotted eagle rays (Eleuthera). Surfers ride the Sapinus wave next to the site. Diving in Tahiti (1990s) gives 18 m max and advises early-morning dives, not after rain or west storms.
