17° 32.7′ S · 149° 34.6′ W · approximate

French Polynesia's great July festival: weeks of competitive Polynesian dance and song on the open-air To'ata stage in Papeete, plus traditional sports and va'a canoe races.

Practical

Approximate: Place To'ata is on the Papeete waterfront west of Marina de Papeete; the coordinate is estimated from the marina's position. Held every July for about two weeks, with a 4,000-seat main stage. Dance groups compete in amateur and professional categories, alongside traditional sports (javelin, fruit-carrier races, va'a), crafts and exhibitions. Created in 1881 as the 'Tiurai' and renamed Heiva in 1985 (French Wikipedia). Programme and tickets on heiva.org. Downtown berths fill up, so arrive early.
