Vaitahu Church and Te Ana Peua Museum
9° 56.3′ S · 139° 6.5′ W
Vaitahu's stone Catholic church, with its stained glass and carved wood, is among the finest in the Marquesas. The small Te Ana Peua museum nearby tells the island's story from first settlement to annexation.
Practical
Church: 'one of the most beautiful in the Marquesas' (2026 brief). Mass with the Aranui passengers features extra singers (Soggy Paws). Museum: listed as 'Te Ana Paua Museum at the town hall' in the 2026 brief (Marquesan culture and archaeological methods). It was 300 XPF in 2018, when the key came from the tourist office opposite (verify locally). Nearby: steles honouring chief Iotete and Dupetit-Thouars' 1838 visit, and the remains of Fort Halley (1842) on the hill (2026 brief). Dress modestly.
