Ua Huka Arboretum (Papuakeikaa)

8° 55.3′ S · 139° 34.3′ W

A 17-hectare botanical garden and orchard founded in 1974. It holds hundreds of fruit and tree species, including about 300 citrus varieties, and staff often let visitors taste or pick fruit. It is also the best place to see the endemic ultramarine lorikeet.

Practical

Coordinate from French Wikipedia (8°55'16"S / 139°34'16"W); OpenStreetMap places the garden about 0.8 km further east, on the road from Vaipaee towards the airport. Open daily; entrance fee (Wikipedia, verify locally). Migration (Jan 2023): on the way to the museum, stop at the 'Subdivision Agricole Ua Huka' (old name on the sign), where workers give tours and let you taste many varieties of mango. Chugach (2019) was given a lot of fruit for free. Jacaranda (2015) saw the rare lorikeet here and picked citrus. Tahiti Tourisme describes several hundred fruit-tree varieties.
