Tikehau Pass Anchorage

15° 0.3′ S · 148° 16.4′ W

A reef-sheltered pocket just inside Tuheiava Pass on Tikehau's west side: sand between bommies, a handy staging spot after the pass and close to the pass for snorkelling and diving.

Practical

Position 15°00.349'S 148°16.355'W in about 6 m between bommies (Sugar Shack 2020; also on Noonsite 2023). Mostly sand with occasional bommies and very good holding, but float your chain (one boat used 5 pearl floats along 50 m of chain). It looks more protected than it is: a large gap in the encircling reef lets lagoon swell straight in, so you pitch in normal trades, especially with wind south of east; fine in light winds. Two moorings with very long floating lines were reported in 2016: keep to windward of them. Fish traps line both sides inside the pass. About 7 nm by the marked channel to Tuherahera village.

Best for

First night after entering Tuheiava Pass in light winds

Season

Light winds; bumpy in fresh SE trades
