Tahanea North Edge Anchorage

16° 46.7′ S · 144° 48.3′ W

A sand anchorage behind a palm-covered motu on Tahanea's NW rim, the move when a front or strong northerly threatens the pass anchorage.

Practical

Position from Sugar Shack (May 2021): 5 m sand among many large, deep bommies, with 4 floats; comfortable in both SE and NW winds. Noonsite (SV Knot Safety, 2023) moved behind a palm-treed island on the northern edge, which 'basically eliminated most of the waves and swell', and saw a 42 kt peak overnight. It is about 8 nm WNW of the passes along the inside of the north rim: go with the sun high and a bow watch. Float your chain with fenders or pearl floats.

Shelter from northerly shifts
