Rimatara North Boat Landing
22° 38.1′ S · 152° 48.1′ W
A tiny breakwater-protected boat harbour on Rimatara's north coast, just east of the airstrip, where local boats and the ship's whaleboat land through the reef; the only practical dinghy landing for yachts.
Practical
Coordinate is the OSM ferry stop inside two mapped breakwaters, about 500 m east of the runway. Pitufa calls the small harbour near the airport 'Taanini' and suggests anchoring in 10-15 m on sand outside it on calm days, with fairly easy dinghy access then (untested; Pitufa could not stop in Oct 2018). The Tuhaa Pae IV lies off and lands cargo by whaleboat; keep clear on ship days (SNATHP calls on most voyages). A surge runs through the gap whenever there is swell: approach only in calm conditions, watch sets before going in, and do not try it at night. Historically (ideoz) boats landed straight onto the beach at Amaru. See passage 'Rimatara North Reef Boat Passage'.
