9° 56.3′ S · 139° 6.0′ W · approximate

The Pahi, Tahuata's endemic kingfisher, lives in the cloud forest and valleys above Vaitahu, among plants and snails found nowhere else. Village guides lead walks to find it.

Practical

Approximate position: Vaitahu valley above the village (UNESCO-listed terrestrial area). The 2026 brief: four local guides (one per valley) accompany birders; contact the president of the Manu Association in Vaitahu, Jeanne Barsinas, +689 87 26 56 19. In Hapatoni, Teii also leads mountain hikes to look for the Pahi. Mount Haaoiputeomo's cloud forest (800-1,050 m) is strictly protected. Wear boots and bring water and repellent.
