No-No Sand Flies (Nuku Hiva Beaches)
8° 55.2′ S · 140° 6.2′ W · approximate
Tiny biting no-nos breed in the sand where fresh water meets the sea, and the whitest Marquesan beaches (Anaho, Haatuatua, Colette, Daniel's Bay) often have the worst; bites can itch for weeks.
Practical
Position approx: plotted at the Taiohae Bay anchorage. Wear repellent ashore and reapply after swimming; some fly out to boats anchored close in. One 2019 crew still had bites four weeks after an island tour. Pitufa recommends the drier October-April period, when no-nos are less of a problem. Mosquitoes are heavy on the Hakaui trail.
