Niutahi Quay and Post Office (Apataki)

15° 34.1′ S · 146° 24.8′ W

Niutahi's concrete wharf sits right in Pakaka Pass, and yachts can lie alongside out of the lagoon chop when the supply ship is not due; the post office is at the quay.

Practical

Sea-seek position 15°34.09'S 146°24.77'W. The downstream section is reserved for the supply ships and has 2.5-3 m alongside; upstream (by the old cold store) about 30 m of quay with 1.5-2 m (sea-seek). Beware strong counter-currents along the quay. A tiny boat basin W of the quay (entrance between two black-and-white pillars, about 30 ft wide, about 10 ft deep, no room to swing) may take a very small yacht stern-to (Nakia 2010). Boats have rafted at the wharf (2011) and others called it easy to tie to at slack (2018). The weekly Cobia supply ship calls here, so be ready to move. Post office (OPT) at the quay; a medical facility is on the paved main road to the right of the quay, with a doctor about 2 weeks per month and a nurse otherwise (2019). Small recycling bins near the village. Water cistern about 10 m from the quay (sea-seek).
