Apataki Gendarmerie Reporting Point (Niutahi)

15° 34.4′ S · 146° 24.8′ W

The Niutahi municipal building that OpenStreetMap tags 'Gendarmerie + Dispensaire': the place to present your papers on Apataki if asked, and the people to ask before anchoring near the pearl farms.

Practical

Position is the OpenStreetMap town-hall building (operator tag 'Gendarmerie + Dispensaire'), on the paved road a few minutes' walk from the quay. Apataki belongs to the commune of Arutua and is NOT a port of entry. Whether a gendarme is stationed here is not confirmed by our sources (verify locally); the Brigade Territoriale des Tuamotu in Papeete covers atolls with no permanent presence (Outremers 360, Dec 2025). Apataki Carenage asks boats it hauls for passports, boat registration and a copy of the customs declaration (equipment list) filed on entry, because 'an occasional visit from the authorities is expected' (Kalliope, Dec 2015), so keep those papers ready. Noonsite advises going ashore on arrival and asking locals where it is permitted to anchor, since pearl farms fill much of the SE lagoon.
