Mont Taitaa Hike (Tubuai)

23° 22.1′ S · 149° 28.1′ W

Tubuai's 422 m summit and its best view: a 360° panorama over the jade lagoon, the motus and the open Pacific, with tropicbirds riding the updrafts.

Practical

Coordinate is the summit (OSM). Pitufa's route: start on the route traversière (the N-S cross-island road), walk up the ridge on a forest road that gradually climbs east to the peak, then descend the very steep path on the other side to the coast near the college, east of the jetty. Going the other way, the path start is very hard to find. Red arrows from the November 'Raid Litchis' race mark the routes all year. About 1 hour 30 minutes up (Tahiti Tourisme); the last stretch is a hands-on scramble. Chugach: easy except mild climbing at the end, track well marked. Sturdy shoes, hat, water.
