Les Sables Roses (Rangiroa)

15° 16.1′ S · 147° 14.3′ W

Sandbanks of bright pink foraminifera sand in shallow turquoise water at the remote south-eastern end of Rangiroa, about 30 nm from the passes; tour boats run day trips but sailors can anchor among the reefs.

Practical

Coordinate is the Tahiti Heritage map pin for the Tahuna One pink sandbank; the yacht anchorage is a separate entry (Les Sables Roses Anchorage). Anchorage 15°16.040'S 147°14.444'W in 1.3-5 m sand, described as perfect in all weathers because the surrounding reefs break the sea from every direction (Be & Be catamaran, 2015). Roughly 29 nm from the Kia Ora anchorage. The final approach crosses fields of coral heads: one crew stood on the pulpit for the last hour calling directions, and others turned back. Never transit at night; go with the sun high or behind you. The pink colour comes from foraminifera shells. Tour boats take about 1.5-2 hours from the villages, so mornings are quietest. No services; carry everything you need.
