Hirifa Kite and Wing-Foil Spot

16° 27.3′ S · 145° 22.2′ W

Steady trade wind over a huge flat-water sand shelf at Fakarava's east corner: one of the best kite and wing-foil spots in the Tuamotus, with a school working from boats in the anchorage.

Practical

Launch on the sand at 16°27.34'S 145°22.25'W (Moana, via Soggy Paws). Kite Tuamotu (Adrien and Aline) teaches kitesurf, kitefoil, wing-foil and wake from April to October (2025 brief: ph +689 87 23 08 45; website lists +689 87 20 07 07, a@kitetuamotu.com). It operates from two boats anchored at Hirifa and runs downwinders between motus. Hazards: shallow sandbars with clustered coral heads just under the surface, hard to see in places; a fall can mean serious injury. The decree bans towed sports and windsurfing inside the anchoring zone itself, so ride away from the anchored boats.
