Ston Walls
42° 50.5′ N · 17° 41.9′ E
The Republic of Dubrovnik began these walls in 1358 to guard the Ston salt pans, linking Ston and Mali Ston across the neck of Pelješac. About 5.5 km survive, with 20 of the original 40 towers, making them one of the longest fortification systems in Europe.
Practical
Coordinate is the wall system (OSM 'Stonske zidine'). Walk the section over the hill from Ston to Mali Ston (about an hour, steep steps, little shade); entrances at both ends. Adult ticket about €10 in summer, less in winter (not confirmed on an official site; check at the gate). Go early or late; it is very hot at midday. Moor at Ston harbour or Mali Ston and walk across.
Best for
A walk on the walls between two oyster towns
Season
Year-round; mornings in summer
