Fortica fortress (Španjola, Hvar)
43° 10.5′ N · 16° 26.5′ E
The fortress on the hill above Hvar Town, rebuilt in 1551 on an older Venetian site and later strengthened by the Austrians. Today it holds a collection of ancient amphorae, and its walls give the best view over the town and the Pakleni Islands.
Practical
Position is the OSM fortress polygon (way 164912693). Walk up from the main square through the north gate, then by stairs and zig-zag paths through the old Groda quarter; it is a steep climb, so go early or near sunset in summer. There is an entry fee. Townspeople sheltered here during the 1571 Ottoman raid.
Best for
The classic view over Hvar and the Pakleni Islands
Season
Apr-Oct; best early morning or sunset
