The Split (Caye Caulker)
17° 45.0′ N · 88° 1.5′ W
The channel that cuts Caye Caulker in two is the island's swimming hole and social centre: a concrete-edged swim spot with a jumping platform, tarpon cruising nearby and the Lazy Lizard bar on the point.
Practical
Hurricane Hattie (1961) opened a shallow passage that villagers led by Ramon Reyes dredged by hand into a channel; tidal flow has since deepened it to about 100 ft and it is now navigable by larger boats (Wikipedia). Swim with care in the tidal flow and keep clear of boat traffic. Tarpon viewing spot just south (OpenStreetMap). Position: OpenStreetMap 'The Split'.
