Caye Caulker Anchorage

17° 44.7′ N · 88° 1.8′ W · approximate

The favourite cruiser stop in northern Belize: anchor in the lee of the 'Go Slow' island off its sandy-street village, with the reef a mile east and water taxis to San Pedro for clearance.

Practical

Position approximate: placed about 350 m off the village's west shore near the Fisherman's Co-op (OpenStreetMap), where Wikipedia notes coral sand gives better holding than the soft mud elsewhere round the island. Depths: the OCC notes found 2.7 m in a well-protected indentation, holding in shallow grass over soft sand; noforeignland reviewers report a well-protected sandy bottom with good holding and generator noise from shore. The Moorings recommends anchoring near the Split to catch the breeze. The inside route from Long Caye Pass averages about 4 m with patches of 2.8 m and as little as 1.9 m on to San Pedro (OCC). Soundings reports a cruiser-built dinghy dock beside the commercial dock. The main area is busy; arrive early (Moorings). Water taxis to San Pedro run about 25 USD return; one 2020 report had the first boat at 8:45 am and last return 4:30 pm (Noonsite reader).
