Black Hills & Halliburton Wreck (Utila)

16° 5.7′ N · 86° 51.7′ W

Utila's signature dives: Black Hills, a coral-covered seamount where currents bring in schools of fish and hawksbill turtles, and the Halliburton, a freighter scuttled upright on the sand in 1998 and now draped in sponges.

Practical

Coordinate is Wannadive's user-submitted waypoint for Black Hills (16°5.731'N 86°51.699'W), on the south side east of Utila Town; the Halliburton wreck lies separately, closer to town — ask your operator for its mooring. The Halliburton lies in about 100 ft (scubadiverlife), upright and nearly intact; Black Hills is an offshore seamount (Wikipedia's Utila article shows a hawksbill there) that dive boats circle; the mound top is shallow and currents can be strong. Dive these with one of Utila's many operators. More than 80 dive sites ring the island.
