South Cay Anchorage (South Andros)

23° 41.1′ N · 77° 22.9′ W

Specks of rock in the middle of nowhere at the southern end of the Andros chain, with good holding behind South Cay among scattered patch reefs.

Practical

Position from ActiveCaptain ('South Cay - 1'). A 2010 crew anchored in 14 ft over sand and sea grass and had to set by hand, but held well. Far more patch reefs S and W of South Cay than charts show; Saddleback Cay's west side is one large patch reef, so pass a mile west of it. The same reviewer had to shift Navionics about 1,168 ft S and 829 ft W to match reality: navigate visually. A second spot ('South Cay - 2', 23.57854, -77.34599) has great snorkelling but strong current, no wind protection, and an uncharted head that a 5 ft keel hit in 'charted 12 ft' (2019).

Best for

Remote reef stop on the way to or from the Jumentos or Exumas
