Pirate's Well Anchorage and mail-boat basin

22° 27.3′ N · 73° 8.0′ W

Off Mayaguana's north-west shore near the settlement of Pirate's Well, with a long beach and a small square mail-boat basin cut through the beach rock - an overnight lee in east and south-east winds.

Practical

Waterway Guide position 22°27.296'N 73°08.041'W, 6-8 ft. The basin with one concrete wall is reached through a cut in the beach rock and coral; range marks are two triangles on stakes behind the dock, and the beach reef on the north side remains a hazard. The dock is untenable, even for the mail boat, in SW or NW winds of any strength. A 2024 reviewer anchored halfway between the chart marker and the mail dock in sand with good holding - in the lee of the wind but with plenty of roll from swell wrapping round the island; fine for a night's rest and little else. Bonefishing flats lie along the north coast.
