Dunmore Town historic district

25° 29.9′ N · 76° 38.1′ W

Harbour Island's only town — once the capital of the Bahamas and later its second city — a grid of pastel clapboard houses and narrow lanes named for Lord Dunmore, governor from 1786, nicknamed the 'Nantucket of the Caribbean'.

Practical

Walkable or by golf cart (the island can be crossed in about 5 minutes and circled in about 20). Look for the Hill Steps cut from stone and Titus Hole, a harbourside cave said to have served as a jail. Bay Street runs along the harbour. Traffic slows for Sunday services. Population about 1,861 (2022 census).

Best for

Strolling colonial streets between beach and harbour
