Bight of Acklins flats

22° 29.5′ N · 74° 4.2′ W · approximate

The vast, shallow lagoon enclosed by Crooked Island, Long Cay and Acklins: miles of crystal-clear flats full of conch and bonefish that make Acklins and Crooked Island fly-fishing destinations, and a protected area since 2015.

Practical

Position is the OpenStreetMap centre of the Bight of Acklins bank, so treat as approximate for a lagoon tens of miles across. OpenStreetMap maps 'The Bight Of Acklins Protected Area' (start date 2015); check current fishing rules with the Bahamas Department of Marine Resources before taking anything. Non-resident boats need a Bahamas fishing permit (Bahamas Customs: $100 under 50 ft, $300 over 50 ft, valid 30 days). Waterway Guide: the Bight is out of reach for most cruising boats, so fish it by dinghy or with a local guide from Spring Point or Crooked Island.
