Anchorage· Great Sale Cay· Bahamas — North

Tom Johnson Harbour (Great Sale Cay East)

27° 0.5′ N · 78° 11.0′ W

The bay on the east side of Great Sale Cay, the place to hide when a cold front's westerly or northerly winds are coming. It is a large sand field with excellent holding.

Practical

ActiveCaptain position. Protection from west and north; very little current; approach directly from the east or south, turning north into the bay, and anchor within about 300 yards of shore in 6 ft. Boats here stayed calm in strong westerlies while boats on the west side rolled all night (2015). After a front clocks to the north, Northwest Harbour (west side) suits again. No beach in the harbor itself. Avoid the charted 'Great Sale Cay 4' spot farther east: reviewers found hard coral rock with no holding and no protection, a mile from the island (2019). Pre-Dorian reports (2012-2019).
