Anchorage· New Providence (Nassau)· Bahamas — North
Southwest Bay Anchorage (Albany)
25° 0.1′ N · 77° 30.6′ W
A large roadstead on New Providence's south-west coast about 500 yards west of the Albany Marina channel markers, the better choice than West Bay when a cold front brings north winds.
Practical
ActiveCaptain position. Protected NW through N to E, including from swell; exposed W through S. Excellent holding in sand: drop on the soft sand patches to protect coral. Approach from the west or south by eye in good sun, piloting around clearly visible coral heads; tide range about 3 ft. A 2020 reviewer moved here from West Bay for a front and held for two days in 20+ knots in about 9 ft (2.8 m) with 22 m of chain, bumpy only during the S-W-N wind shift. Land along the road, or dinghy to Albany Marina for transport, fuel, ice and limited provisions.
Best for
Cold-front shelter on the south-west coast
Season
Fronts (NW-NE winds); avoid in S-W winds
