Thunderball Grotto

24° 10.7′ N · 76° 26.8′ W

A hollow limestone islet between Staniel and Big Major, filmed in the 1965 Bond picture Thunderball. You duck through an underwater entrance and surface inside a domed chamber where shafts of light drop through holes in the roof onto walls of coral and a permanent blizzard of sergeant majors and yellowtail snapper.

Practical

GO AT SLACK LOW WATER — non-negotiable. On the flood or ebb the current through the cut is genuinely dangerous and the low entrances close up at high tide. Tie the dinghy to the buoy on the west side, do not anchor on coral. Fins recommended. NOTE: several travel sites publish a coordinate for this site that is wrong by roughly 60 nm.
