Point Adolphus (Icy Strait)

58° 17.7′ N · 135° 46.8′ W · approximate

Point Adolphus, on the north-east tip of Chichagof Island, is the best-known humpback whale feeding area in Icy Strait, with sea lions, harbor seals, orcas and Dall's porpoise also seen. Tour operators describe it as having the highest humpback concentration in the Alaska panhandle.

Practical

Position is approximate, in Icy Strait just off the point, not the cape on land. Season is May to September with June and July the prime months, per tour-industry sources that are marketing-leaning; independent sighting data were not found. The NOAA rule applies in all Alaska waters: do not approach a humpback closer than 100 yards, and do not put your boat in a whale's path. If you are inside Glacier Bay National Park waters, the NPS limit is a quarter nautical mile. Strong tidal currents in Icy Strait can steepen seas against wind; check the forecast and tide.
