Funter Bay (Admiralty Island)

58° 14.8′ N · 134° 53.7′ W

Funter Bay is a protected bay on the north-west side of Admiralty Island's Mansfield Peninsula, about 14 miles south-west of Juneau per Wikipedia and a favorite local anchorage. Funter Bay State Marine Park covers part of it, and old cannery pilings and a few homes and cabins line the shore.

Practical

Coordinate is the USGS place-name (GNIS) position, via OSM. DNR lists the marine park as undeveloped, 162 acres (another listing says 80 acres), with no road access; fishing, whale watching and bear viewing are noted. The DOT&PF Cannery Float was badly damaged over a winter, with portions unsafe; the primary mooring float was reported still available to transient boats, with shore access not maintained until repairs (the notice is undated; check dot.alaska.gov/sereg/projects/funter-bay-float). The Thlinket Packing Company cannery (built 1902) is mostly gone. Anchoring depths and holding are unconfirmed. Follow ADF&G bear guidance ashore.
