Trou Étienne and Gros Îlet Cyclone Shelter (Baie de Fort-de-France)
14° 33.3′ N · 61° 3.0′ W
The mangrove-fringed coves of Trou Étienne, just east of Pointe du Bout, and the Gros Îlet moorings deeper in the bay are the cyclone refuges the Saint-Pierre mooring authority names for boats in the Fort-de-France bay.
Practical
The Rade de Saint-Pierre's cyclone procedure says that on an evacuation order, boats that can should leave Martinique to get away from the centre of the storm, and the rest should go to an island shelter: in the Fort-de-France bay, Trou Étienne and the Gros Îlet moorings; in the south, the Le Marin cyclone hole. Position is Trou Étienne (OSM). Gros Îlet is at 14.54839, -61.01907. The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, peaking around September 10 (NOAA NHC). Martinique's wet season (July to December) brings the hot, humid southerly winds that sometimes carry hurricanes (Noonsite). Arrive early: these holes fill fast once a watch is posted. Check holding and depth yourself, as our sources give no soundings.
