Puerto Princesa Bay Anchorage (Abanico)

9° 45.9′ N · 118° 43.9′ E

The cruisers' anchorage in the northeast corner of Puerto Princesa's big natural harbour, off the blue-roofed pier of the little Abanico Yacht Club. A recognised typhoon shelter and the only practical place to clear in or out of the Philippines on Palawan.

Practical

Anchor in about 8 m (Noonsite) to 8-10 m (Southeast Asia Pilot) over sand and mud, good holding, just east of the pier with the blue roof; the club will point out a spot. Well protected from all directions. Approach with care and never at night: unmarked reefs lie in the harbour and abrupt shoal reefs sit east of the approach line, and the club reports that C-Map and other electronic charts do not show the approach properly, so use a large-scale local chart, go slowly, and call Abanico on VHF 72 so their dinghy can guide you in (service boat on duty until 5:00 pm). A service charge applies for using the club's dinghy dock and facilities (see club rate list; verify locally). Lock the dinghy and outboard: thefts have been reported. Fuel and water from the club dock (SEAP); full city provisioning a short tricycle ride away.

Best for

Typhoon-safe base for clearing in, provisioning and leaving the boat to fly to Tubbataha or Manila

Season

All year; a typhoon shelter (Palawan lies south of the usual typhoon track)
