Manila Bay Anchorage (outside Manila Yacht Club breakwater)

14° 33.8′ N · 120° 58.6′ E · approximate

The overflow anchorage in open Manila Bay just west of the Manila Yacht Club breakwater, used when the club marina is full. It puts you a short dinghy ride from the club, Roxas Boulevard and the city, with the famous Manila Bay sunset straight off the bow.

Practical

Position approximate: about 450 m west of the marina entrance, chosen in open water clear of the yellow special-purpose buoy marked 'Yacht Basin, Manila Hr' (OSM 14.5638N 120.9780E). The PGYC yacht-club directory says the MYC marina is often full but there is an anchorage outside the breakwater. Marina entrance (MYC): 14°33.865'N 120°58.833'E, between the west mole-head light Fl(2) R (OSM 14.5637N 120.9802E) and the east mole-head light Fl(2) G (OSM 14.5625N 120.9816E). Depth and holding are not published in the sources found; Wikipedia gives Manila Bay an average depth of 17 m. Call MYC on VHF 72 (club site) and email marina@myc.org.ph before arrival. The PGYC directory notes MYC is open only to club members and reciprocal club members, so ask before landing a dinghy. Exposure: wide open to the west and south-west across the bay, so it is a fair-weather NE-monsoon spot. In the habagat (SW monsoon, roughly Jun-Oct) and in any typhoon, a long fetch builds across the bay; the 2011 Typhoon Pedring storm surge destroyed the Roxas Boulevard sea walls (Wikipedia). Water is polluted (Wikipedia), so run the watermaker elsewhere. Heavy ship traffic and floating debris; avoid arriving after dark.
