Mulegé River Mouth Anchorage

26° 54.0′ N · 111° 57.2′ W · approximate

An unusual estuary anchorage under the hat-shaped lighthouse hill of Punta El Sombrerito, a dinghy or taxi ride from the palm-shaded oasis town of Mulegé.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: placed just inside the estuary mouth below the lighthouse (Punta El Sombrerito, Wikipedia 26.9014 N, 111.9533 W). Shallow channel; few boats anchor here. Anchor close to the lighthouse shore out of the main panga channel and set a stern anchor so you lie clear of traffic; boats run the channel in the middle of the night, so leave lights on. Tidal stream and river flow alternate, making it a tricky anchorage; the river water is not recommended for swimming. Getting to town: dinghy up the river to the hotels, or arrange a taxi (about 2 mi). Open to the east outside the mouth — settled weather only.
