The restored 19th-century old town, centered on the Plazuela Machado, with its café tables under the trees and the ornate Teatro Ángela Peralta beside it. A few blocks north stands the twin-spired Basilica Cathedral, finished in 1899.
Practical
From the marinas, take a pulmonía (open-air taxi) or the air-conditioned green Sábalo-Centro bus along the malecón (about 10 pesos in 2015). The Teatro Ángela Peralta stages regular music and drama. Restaurants around the plaza include Pedro y Lola, El Presidio (8 am–12:30 pm and 1 pm–10:30 pm daily) and Topolo, and Casa Medrano serves coffee in a small art gallery. Wikivoyage advises against walking quiet streets after dark, while the cathedral, malecón and Plazuela Machado are fine in daytime. Coordinate is the Plazuela Machado (Wikipedia).
Best for
