La Corbeteña Dive Site

20° 44.0′ N · 105° 50.7′ W

A lone rock far out at the mouth of the bay, about 15 nm west of Punta de Mita. Considered the area's best pelagic dive, it draws dolphins, giant manta rays and sharks in strong blue-water currents.

Practical

Coordinate is the GeoNames position for 'Corvetena Rock' (20.7335, -105.84518). Wikipedia ES lists La Corbeteña as an islet of the Marietas archipelago. Strong currents are very common, so it is for experienced divers only. It is about 2 hours by dive boat from Marina Vallarta (Ecotours, 2 tanks USD 190, no year stated, verify locally). It is fully exposed to open-ocean swell and the afternoon northwesterly, so plan a calm-morning crossing. No shelter or anchorage; dive from an attended boat.

Best for

Advanced open-ocean pelagic dive

Season

Calm mornings; best visibility Jun–Dec
