Cayo Centro Fish-Camp Walk (Banco Chinchorro)

18° 34.4′ N · 87° 20.3′ W · approximate

A short guided stroll through the lobster fishermen's camp and along Cayo Centro's mangrove shore during the surface interval of a Chinchorro dive trip.

Practical

Coordinate is the fishing co-operative 'Langosteros del Caribe' mapped in OpenStreetMap at the SW end of the cay (approximate). XTC's Chinchorro day trips include an on-foot tour of the island and the fisherman camp with lunch; licensed operators handle the biosphere fee and wristband. Island landings need CONANP authorisation - go with a licensed provider from Majahual or Xcalak rather than by yacht. Stay out of the mangroves (crocodiles) and the frigatebird lagoon; GECI notes the CONANP pier and docks are good places to see terns and other seabirds in the late afternoon.

Best for

Seeing the stilt-house fishing community and seabirds
