Shipwreck Beach (Kaiolohia)
20° 55.0′ N · 156° 54.5′ W
Eight miles of windswept north-shore beach facing Molokai, with the rusting concrete hulk of a WWII Navy gasoline barge stranded on the reef.
Practical
The wreck is YOGN-42, a ferrocement gasoline barge launched in 1943 and intentionally beached here around 1950 (Wikipedia; OSM 20.9212, -156.9101). Coast Pilot 10 notes two prominent wrecks on the north reef, 0.7 mile west and 4.4 miles east of Pohakuloa Point. About a half-hour 4WD drive north of Lanai City. Swimming unsafe: shallow reef, strong currents, wind and surf; no facilities. A trail about 200 yards inland leads to the Kukui Point petroglyphs (to-hawaii.com). Not approachable by keelboat: the reef fringes the north shore up to 0.3 mile out.
