Mokuauia (Goat Island) and Malaekahana
21° 39.8′ N · 157° 55.4′ W
A low seabird-sanctuary islet with a small sand beach just off Malaekahana State Recreation Area, reached on calm days by wading or paddling across the shallow reef; turtles cruise the channel.
Practical
Coast Pilot: Mokuauia is 0.2 mile long and 23 ft high, 0.2 mile off Kalani Point, with only 1-2 ft between the island and the point; a rock 0.2 mile seaward of the island is covered 10 ft, and 30-ft Pulemoku rock lies 0.4 mile to the south-east. The island's center is a closed seabird nesting area; keep out of burrows. Cross only in very calm, low-tide conditions; reef holes and currents can make it harder than it looks; no lifeguards. Malaekahana (21.6575,-157.9296) has restrooms, showers, picnic tables and permit camping. Not a yacht anchorage.
