20° 9.9′ N · 155° 53.8′ W
The partially restored 14th-century fishing village of Koai'e on the North Kohala coast, with a mile-long self-guided trail through stone house sites ending at Koai'e Cove, part of the Lapakahi Marine Life Conservation District.
Practical
Coordinate from To-Hawaii.com's map pin. About 12 miles north of Kawaihae off Akoni Pule Highway (Hwy 270). Open 8am to 3:30pm; the gate locks at 4pm. Little shade; bring water. Koai'e Cove has coral rubble and rocky entry, so snorkel only in calm conditions and stay inside the cove; strong currents outside it and winter surf. The MLCD protects the reef, so look without touching. A good winter whale-watching vantage point. The state MLCD layer maps Lapakahi MLCD Subzones A and B offshore.
