Keehi Lagoon Anchorage Area (transient)

21° 19.5′ N · 157° 53.9′ W · approximate

The state-designated anchorage inside Keehi Lagoon for boats passing through Hawaii, a protected flat-water option close to the Sand Island boatyards and the airport.

Practical

Approx position: placed just west of the Keehi Small Boat Harbor channel buoys (state ATON layer), where Coast Pilot 10 puts the special anchorage on the west side of the barge channel; the legal boundary (HAR 13-235-32) is defined from the Kalihi Channel rear range light, so plot it on NOAA chart 19366/19367 or the ENC before dropping. Rules: vessels no longer than 65 ft and drawing no more than 7 ft; open to transient vessels temporarily visiting the State en route elsewhere, boats berthed elsewhere in Hawaii visiting temporarily, and boats on the Keehi mooring waiting list; an anchoring permit is required (HAR 13-235-31/32) and a stay-aboard permit (max 120 days per calendar year) to live aboard. Pick a spot suitable for your draft (the boundary follows the minus-five-foot contour). Hazards (Coast Pilot): submerged pipelines about 160 yards northeast of the north corner of the special anchorage run across the lagoon (do not anchor there), and the south end has several submerged wrecks and obstructions. Apply at the DOBOR Oahu District office, 4 Sand Island Access Rd, (808) 832-3520.
