Huahine Security Advisory (dinghy & yacht theft)

16° 48.7′ S · 150° 59.6′ W · approximate

Huahine has a long-running reputation among cruisers for petty theft from yachts and dinghies, especially in Avea Bay. Lock up, even for dinner ashore.

Practical

Approx: pinned in Avea Bay, the hotspot named by Noonsite. Noonsite (docking page, 2022): 'This bay does have a reputation for petty theft, so be sure to lock your boat at all times and leave the deck lights on if going ashore in the evening.' A 2018 report describes a swimmer boarding an unlocked boat at anchor in Avea while the crew were at dinner and taking about US$2,000 in cash. In 2019 a dinghy at the Fare yacht-club pontoon was interfered with during dinner. Wikivoyage warns that yachtsmen are frequently targeted. Lock the companionway, lock the dinghy and outboard with cable and padlock, lift the dinghy at night, and keep cash and passports hidden.
